How We Made Films for Sequoia & Kings Canyon That Help Everyone Access the Parks

At Petersen Film & Photo, we believe stories can open doors—literally. That’s why we were honored to create the Accessibility Film Series for Sequoia & Kings Canyon National Parks.
This six-part series was designed to showcase how these beloved parks are making the wilderness more inclusive—helping people of all abilities experience the wonder of giant trees, mountain trails, and wild spaces. These films do more than inform—they empower, inspire, and connect.
What the Films Feature
Each short film (3–4 minutes) focuses on a specific location or accessibility experience:
- Giant Forest & Sherman Tree Trail: Wheelchair-accessible shuttle stops, paved trails, and resting points to the world’s largest tree.
- Grant Tree Trail: Tactile exhibits and storyboards for blind and visually impaired guests.
- Buckeye Campground: Accessible campsites, fire rings, and bathroom facilities near the river.
- Crystal Cave: ASL-interpreted tours and assistive listening devices for deaf and hard-of-hearing visitors.
- Roaring River & Panoramic Point Trails: Scenic options for guests of all mobility levels, from strollers to walkers.
Instead of talking at the audience, each film features real visitors sharing their experience—what they loved, what was easy, and what surprised them.
The Heart of Inclusive Storytelling
When we create films, we don’t just aim for information—we aim for transformation. These stories reflect that mission. We believe:
- People connect with people—not pamphlets.
- Compassion drives curiosity.
- Access is about dignity, not just compliance.
By showing firsthand perspectives, these films invite everyone to feel welcomed and equipped to explore.
Our Role in the Project
We directed, produced, and consulted on every step of this campaign. That included:
- Pre-production planning and stakeholder alignment
- On-location filming in remote and protected environments
- On-camera coaching for park guests and ASL presenters
- Cinematic editing and accessible sound design
- Coordinated launch with the National Park Service communications team
Each piece was shaped by real people, real stories, and real vision.
